Milena's story

By Maureen Foley

Milena is the first Cirneco dell' Etna (pronounced cheer - nay - ko) to arrive in Britain from Italy under the Pets Passport scheme.

I first saw this delightful breed some eight years ago at a show in Europe, at the time I had a much-loved Pharaoh Hound, Ch. Tamar-ra Princess of Tamilay. I was immediately attracted to this diminutive cousin and promised myself if the quarantine from Europe was discontinued I would own a Cirneco.

Milena was born in May 2000 and since then it has been 11 months of vaccinations, blood tests, and paperwork. In fact I could write a book on that subject alone. Eventually, with the help of her breeders, Jane Moore and Domenico Tricomi, an authority on this rare breed, all regulations were complied with.

On April the 12th Milena arrived in the UK, flying via Amsterdam as at that time animals could not fly directly from Italy.

Milena adjusted instantly to life here, a house that over the Easter was full of grandchildren, the five resident 'Tamilay' Maltese plus the cat and tortoise.

This small ancient hound, being approx. 18" (46cms) at shoulder, developed in Sicily for hunting over the rocky volcanic terrain, rigorously selected over centuries for its ability to work for hours without food or water has created an extremely hardy breed free from inherited health problems. Affectionate and friendly they are considered easier to train than some of their sighthound cousins.

Milena has already attended shows in Italy gaining the qualification of 'Excellent' and placed in the puppy group at Milan International under judge Ann Arch.

I hope in the future to take Milena to KC events so that people can meet this captivating Italian lady.
